February 22, 2020

Today I had the opportunity to do a poster presentation on my research "Re-examining the Mozart Effect: the Sonata in D major, K. 448, and the Effect of Rhythm on Spatial Intelligence" at the annual Florida Undergraduate Research Conference, one of the nation's largest multi-disciplinary research conferences. Some of the topics addressed include:

What are the myth and truth regarding the “Mozart effect?"

How does rhythm affect human cognition and behavior?

What are potentially new approaches to future experiments on the “Mozart effect?"

Re-examing the Mozart Effect: the Sonata in D major, K. 448 and the Effect of Rhythm on Spatial Intelligence

October 30, 2019

On October 30, 2019 I presented my research on the Mozart Effect at the Florida Gulf Coast Showcase of Undergraduate Studies.

In 1993 a study by Frances Rauscher, Gordon Shaw, and Catherine Ky showed that participants who listen to ten minutes of Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D major K. 448 experienced a temporary boost in spatial IQ reasoning.  Subsequently, numerous studies replicated the original experiment in an attempt to prove or refute the “Mozart Effect.” Though these endeavors took a scientific approach, they were implemented by neuroscientists and psychologists who neglected any musical analyses that may have provided greater insight regarding the outcomes reported. My research examined the unique usage of rhythmic patterns in the first movement of Mozart's Sonata in D major.
